Bone Tumors in the Foot and Ankle: What You Should Know in Marietta, Georgia

Bone tumors in the foot and ankle are uncommon, but when they occur, they can cause persistent pain, swelling, or difficulty walking. These growths can be benign (non-cancerous) or, more rarely, malignant (cancerous). Because the foot contains many small bones and joints, even small tumors can create significant discomfort and interfere with daily activity.

Common benign bone tumors of the foot and ankle include osteochondromas, enchondromas, bone cysts, and giant cell tumors. These often develop slowly and may be discovered incidentally on X-rays. However, they can still cause symptoms such as:

-Localized pain or tenderness

-Swelling or a visible bump

-Difficulty wearing shoes

-Weakening of the bone leading to stress fractures

-Joint stiffness or limited motion

Malignant bone tumors in the foot are rare, but warning signs that should not be ignored include night pain, rapidly increasing swelling, unexplained fractures, or pain that continues to worsen despite rest.

Diagnosis typically begins with a physical exam and imaging such as X-rays. In some cases, advanced imaging like MRI or CT scans may be needed to better evaluate the lesion. Occasionally, a biopsy is required to determine the exact type of tumor.

Treatment depends on the type of tumor, its size, and whether it is causing symptoms. Some benign tumors can simply be monitored. Others may require immobilization, activity modification, custom orthotics, or surgical removal if they are painful or weakening the bone. When caught early, outcomes are usually better.

If you have persistent foot pain, swelling, or a lump that is not improving, it is important to have it evaluated. Early diagnosis helps rule out serious conditions and ensures you receive the most appropriate treatment to keep you active and comfortable.
