Toenail fungus is typically caused by a fungus that belongs to a group of fungi called dermatophytes. It can be painful and may cause permanent damage to your nails. Infected nails can separate from the nail bed causing pain and a slightly foul odor. Fungi organisms live in warm, moist environments, including swimming pools and showers, and can cause problems if the nails are continually exposed to these conditions. They can get in your skin through tiny cuts or a small separation between the nail and nail bed. Toenails often are confined in a dark, warm, moist environment inside your shoes.
