Is Your Achilles Tendonitis Turning Into Your Achilles Heel?

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles was almost completely invincible, with the exception of his heel (Achilles' heel). Whether or not the stories from The Iliad and The Odyssey are factual, the Achilles tendon is a commonly injured area. Any Achilles injuries can be detrimental when walking aroud downtown Marietta, GA and prevent you from enjoying your day!

What is the Achilles tendon?

The Achilles tendon is the union of three very strong muscles (the soleus and the two gastrocnemius muscles) that attach to the back of your heel. If this important tendon slowed down a favored hero in the Iliad, it can slow anyone down! It is not normal to have pain in the back of the ankle that does not go away!

What is Achilles Tendonitis? How is Achilles Tendonitis Diagnosed?

Achilles tendonitis (swelling of the Achilles tendon) can turn into Achilles tendinosis (breaking down of the tendon) over time. Early treatment is always important! Any tenderness to the back of the heel should be examined by your Podiatrist. Without proper imaging (such as x-rays), it is not possible to tell if a fracture or other problems are occurring in the area. While certain foot-types can cause Achilles tendonitis, it can also be caused by a sports injury.

How is Achilles Tendonitis Treated?

Depending on the physical exam and radiology findings, your Podiatrist may immobilize the affected lower extremity, prescribe medications, prescribe physical therapy, order and MRI, and recommend rest, ice, elevation, compression.
