Toenail Fungus

Yellow Toenails

Why is my toenail discolored? Why is my toenail yellow?

Toenail discoloration may be due to toenail fungus, injury, underlying health condition, bacterial infection, medication side effect, eczema, etc. A Podiatrist can help make a proper diagnosis as to why the toenails are discolored.

How to Treat Toenail Fungus

Having discolored toenails can be frustrating. There are a few options when it comes to treating toenail fungus. Topical or oral antifungal medications can be prescribed. A specific medical laser can also be used for fungus removal.

It is important to have fungal toenails cut to hygenic length and filed down to normal thickness in order to prevent damage to the nail bed and nail matrix (the portion that creates new nails). Fungal toenails should be closely monitored.

How to treat Damaged Toenail

If the toenail is discolored from repetitive trauma, a Podiatrist can trim and thin the toenail. Medication can be prescribed as well to help the damaged appearance of the toenail.

If there is an injury or wound underneath the nail plate, the toenail might need to be removed after the toe is numbed in order to treat the injury. It is important to treat cuts or wounds to prevent infection.
